Rounded Spectacles

May 10, 2011

I have a love-hate relationship with glasses. They have been a must of mine since the age of 5 and not all pairs have been flattering. In fact it was not until recently that I wore them outside of the house. My latest pair of purchase are round, tortoise color, harry-potter like frames. (click to see) It was a bold move. I was nervous about taking such a risk on a huge investment but now they have become a recognizable staple. People don’t recognize me without them.  Now with the influx of fresh frames – above example from Elizabeth and James spring line – I have more to lust over. In an extravagant  world I would have multiple pairs of glasses to chose from at the whim of an outfit change.

Oh… to dream.

I am so boring when it comes to trying out new pairs of glasses…I dunno if I could pull off those Harry Potter frames…:D Some people could though!

  3. June 16, 2011 7:28 am

Ah, I started wearing them at age 2. I like the heavy glass ones that we used to wear in the 80s. Oh, and bifocals! You’ve got to have bifocals!

  4. June 16, 2011 7:29 am

    Totally fun — and intimidating!

I wish you could mail order a sample collection of glasses to try on in your home, rather than with everyone and their brother in the mall or at the optician’s office!

I heart glasses. Sadly, some just make me look — stupid. 😦

Round is in fashion like never before, especially it is popular among ladies. Not only it adds that geeky touch, it also transforms the face from pretty to meaningful.

I have four pairs of glasses. Yes, four with a current perscription. If women can buy 5-25 purses, to wear with several outfits, why shouldn’t a man or woman have several pair of glasses. My 64 year-old mother has a 3-tiered box with some 20 pairs, all very different in shape and color. Me, I have my I-am-in-an-artsy-mood-chunky-tortoise-shell glasses, my stream-lined-I-work-in-finance-glasses, my cheapy-wear-at-home-glasses-so-my-toddler and-infant-kids-can-tug-at-them glasses, and my wife-thinks-I-look-good-in-these-so-I-bought-them glasses. I think I am going to buy another pair today. -D (from kloodoo.com daily picture puzzle)

I love the cat-eye pair that you show! They are so cute, and as another long wearer of glasses, I too have a love-hate relationship with them. The only thing I don’t like is that I can’t wear the cute, trendy sunglasses that are out right now for summer, so I usually get reading sunglasses so I can at least read by the pool without feeling blind 🙂 Thanks for the post, I’m looking into the cute cat-eye pair!

  8. June 16, 2011 8:03 am

Oh sure, now you tell me. I just got new glasses, but have only just joined the throngs with the rectangular frames. My old ones were really hideous, old lady glasses! 🙂 Why do they always start a new trend just when I’m learning to like the old one? Those round frames are seriously cute. I don’t think my optician even had any in that style yet.

Funny! I can’t do rounded frames anymore. I had a really cool pair of round frames a long time ago before all of the Harry Potter fashion. I found them stashed away 3 years ago and tried them on again and they just looked bad on me. They looked good on my when I was in High School and during my freshman year of college but not now. I’ll stick to my small and sleek square frames.

I started using clearly contacts to order specs online but I have to say there is nothing like trying them on in a shop. For the record I think the rounded specs look the business!

Nope. I’ll take narrow frames. Being 45 and nearsighted means you almost have the opposite of middle-aged eyes: I can see close up, but need glasses for far away. Narrow frames means I can look under them when I am working closely, as opposed to looking over them when looking far away, as with lunettes.

I’ll keep my narrows, thanks. From having to wear glasses since I was in 3rd grade, I prefer them as inobtrusive as possible.

  15. June 16, 2011 10:59 am

I too recently purchased round glasses (all metal). Love them.

  16. June 16, 2011 12:58 pm

I’m ready for some new ones – I like round and maybe I’ll get plastic instead of wire next.

  17. June 16, 2011 1:54 pm

congratulations on freshly pressed 🙂 you rock!!

  18. June 16, 2011 2:12 pm

That’s a great look. It’s almost impossible for me to pick out frames and especially hard to know what’s in fashion. Thanks for the update.

  19. June 16, 2011 2:13 pm

    They look lovely
    and congrats!

I used to wear glasses and later got lasik much to my husband’s disappointment. He always loved my glasses. I sometimes wish I wore them again so I could wear cool ones like the ones you show here!

    Congrats on being freshly pressed!

One of the few upsides to needing glasses is that you can go find a unique pair. My problem is finding a pair that actually looks good with my face…

  23. June 16, 2011 4:22 pm

I know what you mean. I have to wear glasses too. At first, I hated them and was psyched to finally get contacts! But then I realized the pluses of wearing glasses!

Not only did people recognize me, but my glasses mask symptoms of my night owl habits.
This past year, I went out of my comfort zone and got square-ish frames and scored tons of complements!

Maybe this year, I’ll try HP round ones like yours… Still debating on it. As a former Librarian for 5 years (and still well known as such in the community), I don’t want to further the stigma… 😉

  24. June 16, 2011 4:24 pm

Been wearing glasses since the age of 7!! Rocking a the bold nerdy glasses now 🙂

Great post! I love my glasses…NOW…I first got glasses when I was 3, and hated them most of my life. During my teens and twenties, I struggled with contacts and I would not want to go back to those days. I feel naked without them at this point. I totally agree about having a whole wardrobe of glasses…wouldn’t that be amazing? I’d have to win the lottery or something for that because I wear the progressives now–ultra pricey lenses, but well worth it to be able to see. lol

    Nice…

  31. June 16, 2011 11:27 pm

    your new glasses look great!

As a confession: I have two different pairs of glasses in my current prescription. Actually, make that three if I count my sunglasses. Why not? My previous prescription was round, though, so I went for a change. Round would probably do nothing for me now, but you can certainly pully them off. Way to go!

Also, I did not wear my glasses out during my last couple of years of high school. But with age comes wisdom, and I very much appreciate being able to see what I am looking at now 🙂

Thanks for sharing this great post, and congrats on being freshly pressed!

These vintage glasses doesn’t match with any one (fortunately, hands down for this “new” trend) though but when it does, oh my god, it is just so hot! (and cute)… !!

  34. June 17, 2011 3:14 am

They say round glasses look good on square faces and square frames look good on round faces. I think round glasses on a round face would probably make one look like Austin Powers unless one is skinny and tall. At least my dad did with his bottle bifocals :p

  35. June 17, 2011 3:36 am

I have also been wearing spectacles since before pre-school. I used to do everything I could to “lose” them. Now they’re my accessory of choice 🙂 I own 23 pairs currently, thanks to Zennioptical.com. See? http://teapotchronicles.wordpress.com/2010/07/25/spectacle-spectacular/

While I understand the appeal of a nice pair of rounded spectacles, I can’t help but feel that there is something incredibly misogynistic about them. Anyone agree?
